The brakes did not work well, the first side came out without breaking anything. The brake rod fought all the way out even with ample penetrating oil I was afraid it was going to break.

The parts from the other side look much the same. The pad material is not worn out on either side.

There was quite a bit of mouse nest in both sides, the air hose and shop vac made them look better.

The Clutch Doctor in North Branch rebuilt a set of shoes I had from a previous brake job

The ones I removed from this tractor were larger and very difficult to remove, I had to do some real prying to get them out.

The last paragraph on the installation and adjustment in the service manual says they changed at S/N 24001, this tractor is S/N 8759 so should not have the larger ones. The housing would have been modified a bit to ease installation I'm sure.

I could not get the brake pedal on the right side to come back much at all with the brake rod attached it felt like it was hitting something. It is difficult to see or get fingers in to find out why, but I was finally able to get this chunk of cast iron out through the mouse access hole. It is surely not from this tractor and perhaps was put in there by a child at play.

The front and rear shoe return springs were broken on both sides so new springs were installed. The brakes are functional again.
